LAW, LEGAL PRINCIPLES AND THE BIBLE (LL.B): JUDGMENT

Guest Author: Damilola Akinyemi

Hey there! How are you doing? Christmas is around the corner and I hope you are beginning to smell it. I’m sorry to burst your bubble but I’m not about to write about Jesus in a manger or about how the cities should be painted in red and white. I just want to share a legal principle with you and relate it with the scriptures, I’m sure you’ll be blessed.

Thank you Fay for the opportunity. I’m so excited to be on this platform.

I was in a conversation with my director some time ago and he told me about the position of the opposing party in an interesting case he was working on. They felt a particular judgment should not apply solely because it was delivered a long time ago. What they failed to bear in mind is that judgements don’t have expiry dates.

Yes, a judgment remains valid and subsists until it is set aside or stayed (paused) by a competent court, the longevity of the judgment notwithstanding. The law is settled that the judgment of any competent court, once perfected, and not appealed against, is valid and subsisting until it is set aside by competent court or authority.

See ADEGBANKE v. OJELABI & ORS (2021) LPELR-54992(SC).

Do you know that this is also true of God’s judgment to you?

In this context, I’d like you to see God’s judgment beyond last day’s judgment (that applies too.) God’s judgments are his words, opinions, decisions, and the way he sees you and guess what? They don’t have an expiry date! They are valid and subsisting irrespective of how long ago it was given.

The economy of the country notwithstanding, what he told your parents about you before you were born hasn’t changed. His opinions about you, including how he sees you, haven’t changed, they still subsist. Dust yourself and get back to work.

His plans and decisions for your life are still valid.

The words he spoke to you years ago can still produce again, whether you think they have manifested or not. The promise was for Isaac, yet Abraham still had other children by reason of the word (Genesis 25:2) God’s words are eternal, they aren’t limited by time. Just like the Israelites in exile (Daniel 9:2), if you think the set time for the word has passed, you can still engage the word and it will work.

What he spoke over you last year, month, week, or yesterday hasn’t changed, the time changed but the words remain.

God’s judgment over you is still valid, don’t write yourself off when God hasn’t. 2 Corinthians 1:20 and Jeremiah 29:11 are my authorities.

For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

  1. This was such an awesome read Damilola, thank you! It’s a reminder that even when things don’t work out the way we want it to, God is still working on our behalf, we can still trust in His promises for us, they will surely come to pass. I pray the Holy Spirit brings this to our remembrance when we forget, thank you again Dami!
